Ambulances in Tanzania

There was a pretty good variety of ambulances which delivered patients to Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi, Tanzania. Most common was the Toyota Land Cruiser. Nearly all of the ambulances are owned by hospitals and used to transport their patients to KCMC for a higher level of care. Patients are typically brought from point of injury to the nearest hospital by family members using whatever vehicles they have access to including motorcycles, cars, taxis, and public busses.

There is very little equipment inside these ambulances. Some have oxygen tanks. Most have a single bag or box which is brought from the hospital to the ambulance as needed for the transport. Patients are monitored during transport but there isn’t much ongoing care.
