While staying on the Doctor’s Compound at KCMC outside of Moshi, Tanzania my options for laundry are to pay someone to hand wash it on the compound, hand wash in a sink, or head in to town.
My clothing was specifically selected to make multiple wearings easy and allow for quick drying should I decide to hand wash.
Most of my time is spent in scrubs working in the hospital and while those have definitely gotten some of the expected things on them I can rotate through the scrubs I brought or spot wash them as needed. I’ve been wearing an Outdoor Research t-shirt under my scrub top that is a merino poly blend allowing for odorless repeated wearing.
After about 2 weeks in country I decided to head in to town to try out a laundry business that has a washer and dryer. I don’t have a ton of free time and am choosing to spend a little money to keep the time it would take me to wash the items.
Most laundry businesses in the area are having someone hand wash and line dry the items. Additionally many will charge per item where as the business I selected charges per kg.
I paid 14,000 TSH ($6 USD) to have my clothes washed and dried which took 2 hours. Some reviews said 3-4 hours and I suspect being the first customer on Sunday morning accounted for the quick turnaround time.
The business I went to is Quick Laundry Service on Shule St in Moshi.
The pin on google maps is correct but there isn’t a sign on the street.
Go through the door under the Quick Laundry sign.
Continue straight ahead. Past the open metal door is the customer service area.
My laundry, nearly all of the clothing I brought, weighed between 3 and 3.99 kg and I paid 14,000 TSH for washing and drying. You can pay to have items only washed or only dried.
They will use a hand held luggage scale to weigh your items when you drop them off. If you bring your clothing in a backpack they will include the weight of the backpack in the pricing if you let them. I tossed my clothing in a large cotton scarf that was going to get washed and tied it closed to be weighed.
